Keyword Density, Proximity and Frequency

Keyword Density

Keyword density refers to the ratio (percentage) of keywords contained within the total number of indexable words within a web page. The preferred keyword density ratio varies from search engine to search engine. In general, I recommend using a keyword density ratio in the range of 2-8%

The formula to calculate your keyword density on a web page is a

 (Nkr / Tkn) * 100

  • Nkr = how many times you repeated a specific key-phrase
  • Tkn = total words in the analyzed text

where Nkr is how many times you repeated a specific keyword and Tkn the total words in the analyzed text. This will result in a keyword density value. When calculating keyword density, be sure to ignore html tags and other embedded tags which will not actually appear in the text of the page once it is published. keyword phrase, the formula is a

 (Nkr * Nwp / Tkn) * 100

  • Nkr = how many times you repeated a specific key-phrase
  • Nwp = number of words in your key-phrase
  • Tkn = total words in the analyzed text

                             = (3 x (3 / 500)) x 100
                             = (3 x 0.006) x 100
                             = 0.018 x 100
                             Density = 1.8%

where Nwp is the number of words in the phrase. So, for example, for a page about search engine optimization where that phrase is used four times and there are four hundred words on the page, the keyword phrase density is (3*3/500)*100 or 1.8 per cent.

keyword density for the key-phrase

Density = ( Nkr / ( Tkn -( Nkr * ( Nwp-1 ) ) ) ) * 100. where Nwp = the number of terms in the keyphrase. This general formula allows that the total word count will be unaffected if the key(phrase) is indeed a single term, so it acts as the original formula.

Density = ( Nkr / ( Tkn -( Nkr * ( Nwp-1 ) ) ) ) * 100
              = (9 / (500 – (9 x (3 – 1)))) x 100
              = (9 / (500 – (9 x 2))) x 100
              = (9 / (500 – 18)) x 100
              = (9 / 482) x 100
              = 0.0186721991701245 x 100
              = 1.87%

Keyword Proximity

It measures the distance between two keywords in the text. Keyword proximity is used by some search engines to measure relevancy of a given page to the search request. The idea is that the closer two keywords to each other are, the more relevant the page. So proximity looks at the location of the keyword in the sentence and how often it's being used in that sentence and also takes into account the distance between them. Keyword Proximity is difficult to calculate when two or more keywords are used as keyword combination.  Especially when the keywords are not close together.

Keyword Frequency

Keyword frequency is the number of times a keyword or keyword phrase appears on a single Web page. That you ensure that the most important keyword or keyword phrase is the most frequently use keywords in a web page. But be careful not to abuse the system by repeating the same keyword or keyword phrases over and over again.

Useless Knowledge

Marine mammals such as dolphins and whales manage to sleep without drowning, because only half their brain sleeps, while the other half stays awake and handles the breathing and swimming chores. The two hemispheres of their brains work totally independently. For 8 hours, the entire brain is awake. The left side then sleeps for 8 hours. When it wakes up, the right side sleeps for 8 hours. Thus, the marine mammals get 8 hours of sleep without ever having to stop physically.

Directory Submission Process Data

Directory
A web directory or link directory is a directory on the World Wide Web. It specializes in linking to other web sites , A web directory is not a search engine and does not display lists of web pages based on keywords; instead, it lists web sites by category and subcategory. Most web directory entries are also not found by web crawlers but by humans. The categorization is usually based on the whole web site rather than one page or a set of keywords, and sites are often limited to inclusion in only a few categories. Web directories often allow site owners to submit their site for inclusion, and have editors review submissions for fitness. Example yellow pages, white pages,
Although the terms search engine and subject directory are sometimes used interchangeably, they are not the same thing.

History

ODP (Open Directory project) was founded in the United States as Gnuhoo by Rich Skrenta and Bob Truel in 1998 while they were both working as engineers for Sun Microsystems. Chris Tolles, who worked at Sun Microsystems as the head of marketing for network security products, also signed on in 1998 as a co-founder of Gnuhoo along with co-founders Bryn Dole and Jeremy Wenokur. Skrenta had developed TASS, an ancestor of tin, the popular threaded Usenet newsreader for UNIX systems. Coincidentally, the original category structure of the Gnuhoo directory was based loosely on the structure of Usenet newsgroups then in existence.

The Gnuhoo directory went live on June 5, 1998. After a Slashdot article suggested that Gnuhoo had nothing in common with the spirit of free software for which the GNU project was known, Richard Stallman and the Free Software Foundation objected to the use of Gnu. So Gnuhoo was changed to NewHoo. Yahoo! then objected to the use of "Hoo" in the name, prompting them to switch the name again. ZURL was the likely choice. However, before the switch to ZURL, NewHoo was acquired by Netscape Communications Corporation in October 1998 and became the Open Directory Project. Netscape released the ODP data under the Open Directory License. Netscape was acquired by AOL shortly thereafter and ODP was one of the assets included in the acquisition. AOL later merged with Time-Warner.

In July 1998, the directory became multilingual with the addition of the World top-level category. The remainder of the directory lists only English language sites. By May 2005, seventy-five languages were represented. The growth rate of the non-English components of the directory has been greater than the English component since 2002. While the English component of the directory held almost 75% of the sites in 2003, the World level grew to over 1.5 million sites as of May 2005, forming roughly one-third of the directory. The ontology in non-English categories generally mirrors that of the English directory, although exceptions which reflect language differences are quite common

Online Directory

A website submission service where your website is added to the proper category in a searchable online directory which enhances your site’s visibility and creates relevant inbound links to your website. When our clients ask us to define directory submission, we find it helpful to say that it benefits your website in two ways. When a site is listed in an online directory, it creates quality inbound links to your site and that also enhances your site’s visibility and ranking.

How a Web Directory Works
Web Directories list Websites - normally by category. Web Directories help Web users find the websites that interest them or they would like to visit.
A Web directory organizes Web sites by subject, and is usually maintained by humans instead of software. The searcher looks at sites organized in a series of categories and menus. Web directories are usually much smaller than search engines' databases, since the sites are looked at by human eyes instead of by spiders.
There are two ways for sites to be included in a Web directory's listings; either the site owner can submit the site to the Web directory, or the directory's editor(s) will eventually come across that site.
When a web user searches for something, the search engine crawlers scan the thousands of pages in online directories to provide the results. Because the site has already been indexed and categorized in the directory. And When a site is listed in an online directory, it creates quality inbound links to your site and that also enhances your site’s visibility and ranking.

Main Factors to Do Directory Submission
Free (or) paid directories
When choosing directories going for the paid ones can be better, mainly because the links seem to last a lot longer. Many of the free directories seem to disappear or delete links after a year or so. However, there are a few free directories out there that should always be used - directories that have stood the test of time

Niche or general directories
Submitting to a combination of both niche and general directories is usually a good idea.
For most industries there are a variety of niche directories out there - the best way to find them is through a search engine. Do a search on Google, MSN or Yahoo for directories in your niche area - those that come up in the first few pages of results are usually the best ones to use.
With general directories it's better to go for those that are more established. The older a directory is the better.
Page Rank - does it still matter?
Because directories are generally quite large, they need a certain amount of Page Rank to get all of their pages indexed properly. However a high Page Rank isn't the be-all and end-all. Google's recent crackdown on directories has made visible Page Rank even more irrelevant when it comes to choosing directories. There are directories out there that have no Page Rank whatsoever that can offer value.
If a directory is ranking well in the search engines then you can rest assured that it has enough Page Rank. If you're unsure then check how many links it has via Yahoo! Site Explorer or another link popularity checker.

Anchor text
It's always best to get the main search phrases that you are targeting in the links to your site. However this isn't always possible and unfortunately many of the best directories won't let you do this. Sometimes you can get around this problem by slipping in a search phrase at the end of your company name.
Before submitting have a good look around a directory and get a feel for what you can and can't get away with. Some directory owners will let you use a search phrase on its own, whereas others are very strict and will only use your business/website name. In between you have those where you might just be able to slip a search phrase in.
Doing your homework comes in handy - if you try to use a search phrase on its own and they change it to your business/website name then it's very unlikely you'll be able to get them to change it to your website name with a search phrase at the end. If you'd submitted it like that in the first place you may have got away with it.

Always try to get one of your search phrases in and vary the anchor text as much as possible - this will appear more natural to the search engines.

Varying your description
Many directories will provide you with your own page about your business. If you have the same description on every page across different directory websites then many of these will be seen as duplicate content by the search engines and your links will get devalued.
To avoid this, write a unique and substantial description for every single directory (200+ characters works best). Make sure the descriptions accurately mirror your products and services and those they read well.
Deep linking
Many directories allow you to add extra links directly to internal pages of your website. You should take turns in linking to different pages of your website using different variations of the phrases you're targeting on each page. Using the same anchor text to link to the same page over and over again will appear unnatural to the search engines and this could work against you.

How many directories should you submit to?
There's no fixed number of directories that you should get listed in. Work out a 12 month directory submission budget for each site and then do so many each week or month for the full duration.
When you're building links to your site via directories or any other method, you should do it over time. Submitting to 100 directories in a week and then forgetting about it won't be as effective as spreading the 100 directory submissions over a 3 month period.

How to do Directory Submission?

Directory services help in developing anchor-rich links to your sites from category pages related to your topics or industry. This saves your time as it is important to exchange links with sites which are relevant to your site users as well as have similar topics. There are certain recommendations which website owners should follow while directory submission.
Website owners may formulate description of their site, if it is long then description may vary from 60 to 70 words and if it is relatively short then keep it to 30 or 40 words.
You should also write your best key-words. It is advisable to develop a list of key words of your website and keep them in the same file of description as there are certain directories which require your keyword list.
You can create different variants of these descriptions so that it may help you trace your submissions in the future.
In case you do reciprocal directory submission, then it is advisable to maintain a list of your reciprocal link page URLs, as these are required to be pasted into the input boxes in the directory submission form.
Be careful while submitting and take into account the submission guide for each directory. You may adjust your description and link text accordingly wherever you think it is required.
There are many paid directories which use PayPal for payment. Thus, it is beneficial for the website owners to create a business PayPal account, but make sure you set your budget beforehand. It is good for the website owners to stick to their budgets. Having a PayPal account would help you to keep a record of your expenditure.

First we check if your site isn't listed already, to avoid duplicated submission in the same directory.
All the directory sites have different rules and requirements. Some directory sites require a description of maximum 250 characters, the next one of minimum 250 characters and so on. Our staff is trained to pay close attention to each and every one of those details while doing your manual directory submission.

Follow these tips:

1. Submission of Home Pages only.

Some of the SEO directories available to you will only allow acceptance of your home page and generally deep linking is not allowed from these particular directories. There are some directories that state they will permit deep linking with an individual page URL or using a sub-folder and generally you will be accepted if you try to use deep linking. However if it is not stated that there is deep-linking then you will most certainly find your submission is rejected.

2. Keyword targeting and website titles.

When you are submitting your entry you are generally asked for your website title. Usually three to five words are permitted in the website title field; if your website title itself is very long then this may mean your submissions are rejected regardless. This title usually will be the anchor text detail that will be used to link back to your website. This field therefore is a very important aspect in the directory submission process. Some directories will request the website title be used and others will let you use some keyword targeting as well. Either way you still need to ensure that your title and keyword information is within the guidelines or rules of the directory submission site.

3. Category selection is a vital factor in directory submissions.

You must ensure that you select the correct category for your directory submissions. This point cannot be stressed enough. If you choose an incorrect category or an unrelated category it is almost certain that your submission will be rejected. The directories generally state in their rules or guidelines that you need to select the deepest category option available. That means you need to choose the category that is most directly related to your business product or service and website. The deepest category is in fact the best option for you anyway and for your website but you need to be very thoughtful when selecting the category you wish to be listed under. Good category choice improves your acceptance rate but also is the best assistance for your website as it will allow the directory listing to provide a contextual link back to your page rather than a standard back link that may not be relevant to your business. The contextual links back to your page are much more important for your ranking and overall business visibility than a standard back link.

If you were to automate directory submission, how would it affect your website?
Is it a good idea?
These are just some of the questions that your everyday online business owner has to tackle when it comes to figuring out better and more efficient ways of promoting their website. It really is no secret by now that online website directories play an important role when it comes to creating back links and generally improving your site ranking in the various search engines. Besides that, it can also help generate targeted traffic for you because of the fact that these directories organize the website according to category thus making it for people to search by what interests them. For the website owner, nothing could be better than that, especially since they can submit their websites to these directories for free. However, there is one drawback to using online directories as a means of promoting and generating traffic for your website. The thing is that to be able to successfully accomplish your goal, you would need to submit your website to hundreds of directories which can be both a time-consuming and tedious task.

Of course, no one has enough time in a day to accomplish all that needs to be done, let alone sit in front of the computer for hours in order to submit your website to as many directories as you can. But there is no need to fret. As we have mentioned earlier, you can easily accomplish this task by using automated directory submission software that would handle all the hard work for you. In fact, it can submit your website to hundreds of directories within a short period of time and without even breaking a sweat. Whilst there are some websites that require some kind of validation thus preventing the automatic directory submission software to successfully submit your website, this shouldn’t worry you at all. What do you mean by SEO-friendly directories?
Of what use would links be, if search engines were unable to notice them? A link received by a website from a directory is considered only if it is possible for the search engines to 'read' or 'detect' that link. If the search engines can read these links, they are SEO-friendly links. The directories from which these links are received are SEO-friendly directories.

There are several factors that make a directory SEO-friendly:
• There shouldn't be a META no follow or no index tag on the link pages
• The links shouldn't have a 'rel=no follow' tag on them
• The links shouldn't be JavaScript-generated
• The links should not re-direct
• The URL of the links page should not contain too many parameters

How long do the directories take to approve your links?

Typically, directories take anywhere between a week and three months to approve a submission; that means once you submit to a directory you have to wait for up to 90 days before you can find your link in the directory (different directories have different approval period, most take a maximum of 90 days), which may seem like long time but in reality is not. The reason for this wait, of course, is that a good, SEO-friendly directory painstakingly reviews each submission it receives and only after ascertaining the quality of the links does it grant approval. Good directories have strict quality guidelines, and only sites meeting the prescribed standards of quality can find acceptance.

You’ll find that most good directories always approve good links. But to ensure that you get maximum number of approvals, you should submit to as many directories as possible, SEO-friendly ones, of course.

• The Directory should provide a direct do follow link. No JavaScript window. open or server-side redirects. Well we can accept 301 redirects to some extent.
• Your Listing page should be indexed regularly and therefore should be easily reachable for the search engines. It would be really awesome if your listing can be reached from the home page in 3-4 clicks.
• The site should have a aggressive linking structure. You should be linked from the category / subcategory / locality / tag pages which generally attract the maximum visits and carry most weight in terms of authority and Page Rank.
• Page Rank of the Directory does matter what ever other suggestion you might have heard. Make sure not just the Home page the category pages have good PR. Anything above 4 is welcome. But remember that the PR is on a logarithmic scale so the difference between PR5 and PR6 is exponentially higher than the difference between PR4 and PR5.
• Pagination is a major woe. Some of the directories have thousands of results to be displayed for a single search or category. In that case they have to break the results into pages and display them separately. Now your job is to make sure these sub pages are indexed as well.
• Check the directory’s domain authority and the page authority of some of its most popular category pages. That should give you an idea of the value it hold for you.
• Finally make sure the directory is popular. It should have decent monthly traffic and should be useful to the visitors. You may try some traffic crunching service like compete or alexa.
